Urea: Dermatologists' best-kept secret
Urea in skincare: hydrate or exfoliate?
Urea is an ingredient that hydrates or exfoliates the skin depending on its concentration. Here's how to use it.
What is urea used for?
Naturally present in the skin, it helps retain water. In skincare, it has two effects:
✔ Less than 10% → Hydrates the skin by retaining water.
✔ More than 10% → Exfoliates by removing dead skin cells.
Hydrating Urea (5 to 10%)
It helps the skin stay supple and well-hydrated, without feeling greasy.
Ideal for :
+ Dry or sensitive skin
+ Repairing the skin barrier
+ Soothing tightness
It is found in face and body creams, especially for sensitive skin or skin prone to eczema.
Exfoliating Urea (10 to 30%)
It smooths the skin by eliminating roughness and dead cells.
Effective against :
+ Dry and rough skin (elbows, heels)
+ Small bumps on arms
+ Thickened areas (psoriasis, calluses)
At 30%, it is even more powerful for softening very dry skin.
How to use it?
Daily hydration → 5-10% cream, morning and evening.
Targeted exfoliation → 15-30% product, 2 to 3 times a week.
