It retains more than 1000 times its weight in water... It's hyaluronic acid! Pure or with its derived forms, hyaluronic acid is a key active ingredient in routines to plump and hydrate the skin. So to take advantage of its moisturizing power, its plumped skin effect or its ability to smooth wrinkles, we explain everything about hyaluronic acid.
What is hyaluronic acid?
Derived from the carbohydrate family, hyaluronic acid is a natural component of the skin : it supports the hydration and volume of the skin and is as important as elastin or collagen. Strictly speaking, hyaluronic acid does not bring water to the skin: a bit like a sponge, it attracts water and retains it in the skin.
Hyaluronic acid has derivatives: it is found in several forms, each of which has a different molecular weight . The interest in this molecular weight, or the size of the molecule to simplify, lies in its ability to penetrate more or less deeply into the skin. Indeed, the smaller the molecule, the more it can penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin and its moisturizing properties are even more interesting.
Similar to collagen, hyaluronic acid production declines with age. Skin aging then leads to a loss of hydration and volume, resulting in drier and more marked skin. It is around the age of 50 that the quantity of hyaluronic acid present in the skin is halved.
The benefits of hyaluronic acid
Hyaluronic acid reacts with the skin in several ways :
- When the skin detects hyaluronic acid, the body stimulates its own production of hyaluronic acid . Enough to boost your hydration level !
- Hyaluronic acid penetrates the skin and takes moisture from the air with it . This is why it is better to apply hyaluronic acid to a damp face, after a moisturizing mist for example.
- Low molecular weight hyaluronic acid stimulates fibroblasts , responsible for collagen production.
Hyaluronic acid therefore has multiple benefits. By attracting up to 1000 times its weight in water, it intensely hydrates the skin. It then has an anti-aging action in two stages:
- A mechanical action , since by attracting water like a sponge, it restores volume to the skin to smooth wrinkles and plump the face .
- A direct action , since it stimulates the production of collagen . Collagen in turn improves the firmness of the skin, helping to smooth wrinkles and combat sagging skin. A powerful moisturizing agent with a definite anti-aging benefit!
Do I need hyaluronic acid?
Oily, dry, normal or combination skin, all skin needs hydration . The hydration provided by hyaluronic acid helps to homogenize the texture of the skin and make it softer and more supple. A hydrated skin barrier also ensures good skin health: fewer imperfections, wrinkles, spots and better healing.
Moisturizing oily skin is also essential: dehydrated oily skin compensates by producing more sebum to protect itself from external factors.
Our hyaluronic acid products
For dehydrated skin SOS , we have designed the rehydrating mask . By reformulating it, we reinforced it with aloe vera to hydrate, cucumber to soothe but above all two molecular weights of hyaluronic acid. High molecular weight hyaluronic acid moisturizes the skin for an immediate plumpy, soft and supple effect . Low molecular weight hyaluronic acid deeply hydrates, boosts the production of collagen and the natural production of hyaluronic acid.
In order to keep up with the rhythm of your skin and occasional periods of dryness, we then thought of the hydrating booster . Ultra concentrated in hyaluronic acid (3%), it reinforces the moisturizing action of your day cream in just a few drops. Enough to avoid changing your cream as winter approaches!
