Melaleuca alternifolia is the scientific name for tea tree oil, also known as tea tree oil. Tea tree oil is an essential oil extracted from the fresh leaves, terminal branches and stem of this shrub native to Australia. The oil thus extracted is rich in active ingredients, often praised by acne-prone skin.
What active ingredients are in tea tree essential oil?
Tea tree oil is suitable for all skin types and is especially recommended for acne-prone skin for its antibacterial properties. Among its active ingredients, two molecules are at the origin of the benefits of tea tree oil:
- Alpha -terpineol has an antibacterial action which fights against the bad bacteria responsible for acne. This molecule prevents pimples from becoming infected by bacteria. It is also responsible for the fresh feeling of tea tree oil.
- Terpinene has antiseptic, antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties. An ally to prevent and soothe painful acne.
Tea tree oil also contains a good number of antioxidants: they limit oxidative stress due to free radicals and thus combat dull complexion.
